The tiger is the largest member of the cat family, and is renowned for its power and strength. Tigers use their striped coats as camouflage, no two tiger’s stripes are alike. A fearsome nocturnal hunter, tigers have been known to travel miles to hunt buffalo, deer, and other large mammals. The tiger is a popular cultural symbol in Asia, as well as in Western literature, often used as a symbol of solitude, ferocity, anger and mystery. The tiger’s contrasting stripes also serve as a metaphor in mythology for a duality of nature or a balance of yin and yang. Tigers appear in traditional tattoo flash; circus acts and posters often featured fierce images of tigers which may have served as inspiration for the traveling tattooer.
