Peonies traditionally represent wealth, honor, romance and love, and are considered a good omen. In Greek mythology there is a myth in which the Goddess of the moon, Selene, creates the peony to reflect the light of the moon at night. During the Middle Ages “lunatics” were covered with the leaves and flowers of peonies to cure them. It was also considered unlucky to dig up a peony plant, and if you slept with the seeds of a peony plant under your pillow it was supposed to ward of nightmares. I don’t think Anna got her peony tattoo for any of those reasons, but it’s fun to read a little about different superstitions and beliefs surrounding different symbols and plants! Thanks so much Anna!
