Lighthouses mark dangerous coastlines, hazardous shoals, reefs, safe entries to harbors, and can also assist in aerial navigation. Because of this, the lighthouse is a popular symbol of a ‘guiding light,’ or safe haven on the horizon. For this lighthouse tattoo, John wanted to incorporate Japanese-inspired background with traditional Americana imagery. This was something new for me, and I had a great time doing it. I am so grateful to my client for trusting me to do a good job and allowing me to try new things. Traditional Americana tattooers have been incorporating imagery and background techniques from traditional Japanese tattooing and artwork for decades; the images of Japanese tattoos Sailor Jerry was exposed to obviously heavily influenced many of his larger scale works. I really enjoyed trying my hand at this, and would love to do more and learn more about traditional Japanese tattooing and Japanese-influenced American tattooing. Thanks for looking!
