The Cecropia Moth is North America’s largest moth. Scientists have documented female cecropia moths with a wingspan as wide as six inches! Like all members of the Giant Silk Moth family, cecropia moths are designed only to reproduce and lack functional mouth parts or a digestive system. Because of this, the moth only survives about two weeks. Cecropia moths can be found as far west as the Rocky mountains, and north into Canada. If you’re lucky, you can spot a cecropia moth in Minnesota as soon as it begins to warm up in May or June.
